When he woke up, a massive container ship had crashed into his front garden after running aground in Norway.
At approximately 5:00 p.m. local time (03:00 gmt) on Thursday, the 135 m (443 ft) ship was just meters away from his home.
The only person who informed Mr. Helberg of the disturbance was his terrified neighbor, who had observed the ship as it made its way directly to land in Byneset, close to Trondheim.
In an interview with TV2, Mr. Helberg stated, “I don’t like to open the door at that time of day.”.
“I was pretty shocked to see a large ship when I went to the window,” he continued in an interview with the Guardian.
In order to see the top of it, I had to stoop down. It seemed so unbelievable. “..”.
Jostein Jorgensen, a neighbor, claimed that he came running to Mr. Helberg’s house after being awakened by the sound of the ship approaching land at full speed.
“I thought he was out there already, but there was no sign of him. “I repeatedly pressed the doorbell, but nothing came up,” Mr. Jorgensen said.
He told TV2: “And I only managed to get in touch with him when I called him on the phone.”.
When it veered off course, the 16-person cargo ship, the NCL Salten, flying the Cypriot flag, was heading southwest through the Trondheim Fjord to Orkanger.
According to the AFP news agency, no one was hurt in the incident.
There is no known cause for the collision, and Norwegian police are reportedly looking into it.
Mr. Helberg continued, “It’s a very bulky new neighbor but it will soon go away.”.
In 2023, the ship reportedly ran aground once before, but managed to free itself.
