UFC 316 returned to Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey on Saturday night, and it was another action-packed night in “The Garden State.”. “”.
The main card began with Kevin Holland defeating Vicente Luque via second-round submission. Next, rising bantamweight Mario Bautista spoiled Patchy Mix’s promotional debut by outworking the former Bellator champion to win eight straight fights. Finally, Joe Pyfer defeated Kelvin Gastelum via unanimous decision to end the non-title slate.
Two-time champion Julianna Peña was submitted in the second round by Kayla Harrison, who completed her ascent to the top of the women’s bantamweight division in the co-main event. The two-time Olympic gold medallist dominated Julianna Peña, putting her on the canvas in the first round and dominating her for most of the frame. Harrison was grounded, and Peña lost a point for two illegal upkicks. UFC 316: Joe Pyfer’s Post-Fight Interview.
Two times in the first round, the burly middleweight dropped Gastelum with a strong, looping right hand, sending him to the canvas. As Gastelum slowly made his way back into the fight and Pyfer sought one-shot kills, the final two rounds became increasingly tense as the fight went to the scorecards.
Following the collection and totaling of the scorecards, Pyfer emerged victorious and was awarded a sweep of the scorecards. With his current 5-1 record inside the Octagon and his continued progress, he is one step closer to making the Top 15.

The unheralded MMA Lab product took advantage of Mix’s decision to stand flat-footed and keep his head on the center line by getting loose with his hands right away and landing whenever he wanted while switching targets. Despite Mix’s slight advantage in the second round, Bautista performed admirably and defeated the former Bellator champion in the third round, destroying him and establishing his supremacy in the closing five minutes.
For Bautista, who defeated Jose Aldo in a contentious decision last October but hasn’t received much attention in the crowded 135-pound class, this was a much-needed breakthrough victory. In order to truly establish himself as a rising threat in the bantamweight division, the 31-year-old had to outwork the highly regarded newcomer Mix. UFC 316: Kevin Holland’s post-fight interview.
In the first round, Holland’s hyperactive style prevailed over the striking exchanges, jawing at Luque throughout the frame and inflicting an elbow in tight. After Holland threw Luque to the ground in the second, the long-limbed Texas fighter jumped on a D’arce choke, tightening it up and locking down the tap as the Brazilian attempted to pull himself up.
After losing at middleweight to begin his 2025 campaign, Holland has now won back-to-back fights. This was a fantastic performance by the all-action performer, who will undoubtedly make two or three more shows before the year ends.
