Jurassic World Rebirth is that unicorn, upholding the meaty grosses this Universal–Amblin dinosaur franchise has a long history with.
2022’s Jurassic World: Dominion opened in 15 markets ahead of domestic and the rest of the world, earning $55M in its first frame.
By the way, that’s higher than Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom‘s global start of $298.9M (unadjusted for currency swings and inflation).
Independence Day distractions were a concern in terms of the longevity of Jurassic World Rebirth throughout this weekend, and well, they couldn’t stand up to this movie’s feet.
Jurassic World Rebirth posted the best July 4th haul for a No.
SUNDAY EARLY AM: Identify a franchise that retains its box office success despite changing its cast and characters. Maintaining the meaty gross that this Universal-Amblin dinosaur franchise has a long history of, Jurassic World Rebirth is that unicorn. With a revised 3-day total of nearly $90M and a 5-day total of $145.3M, the Scarlett Johansson-starring film, which was directed by Gareth Edwards, had its highest day since opening Wednesday, posting $35.6M on Saturday, up 35% from Friday. Some even predict that the film will earn $147 million during its Wednesday–Sunday run.
Shot in Thailand, Malta, and at Sky Studios UK, the net $180M production received $150M in media value from promotional partners, including Quaker, Jeep, Dr. Pepper (11 custom cans with a Jurassic theme), MandMs (Jurassic mega-packs), 7-11 (which converted three stores into Jurassic World Rebirth experiences with special merchandise, décor, and photo ops), and Johansson’s skincare line, The Outset.
If the foreign box office stays the same, the global start rises to $316.6M, making it the second-best global debut for a Jurassic film after the $525.5M of the original Jurassic World. Jurassic World: Dominion, which debuted in 15 markets ahead of both domestic and international markets in 2022, made $55 million in its first frame. Dominion launched in 57 additional markets outside of North America during its second weekend, and by the end of its second Sunday, it had amassed $386 million worldwide, including all of the early openers from their second weekend.
The second Saturday for Apple Original Films’ F1 via Warner Bros. was estimated to be around $10.6M, up 54% from Friday, and the three-day total was around $26M, down 54%, for a ten-day total of $109.4M.
SATURDAY AM UPDATE: Universal & Amblin’s Jurassic World Rebirth dominated to a July 4th Friday of $26.3M, +4 percent from Thursday, proving that these dinosaurs were unaffected by barbecues, swimming pools, and fireworks. After its $30 million premiere, which I’ve heard had showtimes starting at 12:01 AM, yesterday was the film’s second-highest grossing day.
While the Friday-Sunday take is $85.4M, the 5-day take for the Gareth Edwards-directed film is now $141.2M. Nancy has more, but the global opening is $312 million from 82 markets. This is higher than the $298.9 million global opening price of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (without accounting for inflation and currency fluctuations). With a $525 million global debut, Jurassic World is the franchise’s grand T-Rex and holds the sixth-highest opening record in history.
Over the course of this weekend, Independence Day distractions raised questions about Jurassic World Rebirth’s endurance, and, well, they were unable to keep up with the film. Indeed, it might be preferable if July 4th falls on a Friday. On July 4th, Jurassic World Rebirth had the highest haul for a No. One film after COVID surpasses Despicable Me 4 ($20.3M, July 4th on a Thursday), Rise of Gru ($16M, the holiday on a Monday), Sound of Freedom ($14.2M, the holiday on a Tuesday), and F9 ($5.2M, July 4th on a Sunday) from the previous year. With Transformers: Age of Extinction, the last time July 4th fell on a Friday was in 2014. The holiday saw a +10% increase in business over Thursday, not a decline, with a daily take of $10.6 million.
According to diagnostics, the audience is growing older, with only 36% of viewers under 25 compared to 56% for Jurassic World Fallen Kingdom and 41% for Dominion. Rebirth’s 51 percent of the 18–34 group was slightly larger than Dominion’s 46 percent. 60 percent to 57 percent of PostTrak users strongly recommend Rebirth over Dominion, which is the best measure of audience interest in the film. With 45 percent (41 percent) Caucasians, 26 percent (25 percent) Latino and Hispanic, 13 percent (16 percent) Black, and 9 percent (15 percent) Asian American, the diversity composition is somewhat similar here compared to Dominion (in parenthesis). Men make up 61% of the sample, with the largest demographic being 25–34 years old (29%).
Jurassics is a family film, and according to PostTrak, it is attracting 41% of both parents and children. Thirty-two percent of the audience consisted of people with one to five friends. According to 7 percent of people on a date and 21 percent of people with a spouse or partner, dinosaurs aren’t really a date night movie.
The Scarlett Johansson, Mahershala Ali, and Jonathan Bailey film is doing well nationwide, with the South and South Central seeing the most growth. Dominion was also strong in South Central. With $230,000 so far, AMC’s Disney Springs in Orlando is the highest-grossing movie theater in the nation. PLFs are the most popular option, accounting for 29% of ticket sales, with 3D alone making up 18%. There are no Imax screens. Thirty-five percent of its $145 million opening weekend was made up of Imax and PLFs on Dominion.
Although 58 percent of moviegoers purchased their tickets on the same day for Rebirth, the reboot’s presales were better, with 30 percent of buyers snatching up tickets in the last week (compared to 14 percent for Dominion).
51 percent of respondents cited the franchise’s popularity as the reason they purchased tickets, which is obviously higher than Dominion’s 43 percent. Last time, Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard received 25% of the vote, while the new cast of Johansson, Ali, and Bailey received 22%.
At 17 percent, the in-theater trailer continued to be the most effective marketing tool for moviegoers, according to PostTrak. Studios executives are concerned that, in a world where reserved seating is common, ticket buyers are going extinct because they are watching fewer in-theater trailers because of the lengthier preshows at the top four circuits. When it came to purchasing tickets for Rebirth, moviegoers were also strongly influenced by the online trailer, the university’s social media campaign (14 percent), and word-of-mouth recommendations (12 percent).
Of those surveyed, 53% said they would see a Rebirth sequel, while 33% said they would be open to one, depending on whether it piqued their interest.
