Joachim Trier’s ‘Sentimental Value’ Wows Cannes In Premiere, Gets Extraordinary 19-Minute Ovation

Joachim Trier returned to the Cannes Film Festival on Wednesday night to world premiere his new film Sentimental Value, which scored an extraordinary 19-minute standing ovation after its screening at the Grand Théâtre Lumière.
All walked the red carpet tonight in Cannes, where Sentimental Value is playing in the competition lineup, before entering the venue for the screening.
In the film, Reinsve plays Nora, an actress, who with her younger sister Agnes (Lilleaas) are reunite with their estranged father Gustav (Skarsgård), a once-famous director who offers Nora a role in what he hopes will be his comeback film.
When Nora turns it down, she soon discovers he has given her part to an eager young Hollywood star (Fanning).
But tonight’s 19-minute tally for Sentimental Value certainly has made the family drama’s presence known in the hunt for the Palme d’Or.

Following its screening at the Grand Théâtre Lumière, Joachim Trier’s new film Sentimental Value received an incredible 19-minute standing ovation. On Wednesday night, Trier returned to the Cannes Film Festival to give the film its world premiere.

Norwegian director Trier’s most recent film, a family drama starring Stellan Skarsgård, Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas, and Elle Fanning, reunites with Renate Reinsve, who took home the Best Actress prize in her role in Trier’s 2021 Cannes film The Worst Person in the World.

Before heading inside for the screening, everyone walked the Cannes red carpet, where Sentimental Value is part of the competition lineup. When the lights came up, the crowd erupted.

Reinsve portrays actress Nora, who, along with her younger sister Agnes (Lilleaas), is reunited with their father Gustav (Skarsgård), a former director who offers Nora a part in what he hopes will be his comeback movie. Nora quickly learns that he has given her role to a young, eager Hollywood star (Fanning) after she declines it. Together, they create a complex web of family dynamics.

It’s generally accepted that Guillermo del Toro’s 2006 fantasy drama Pan’s Labyrinth set the record at 22 minutes, even though there isn’t an official record for Cannes ovations—there isn’t even an official way to time applause here. However, the family drama has undoubtedly become more noticeable in the pursuit of the Palme d’Or after tonight’s 19-minute Sentimental Value total.
