Jets remain winless after ugly loss to Panthers with QB controversy brewing

As you may have expected in a game between the Jets and Panthers, this was some dreadful football.
And their performance, in a 13-6 loss to the Panthers, did not fail to meet the low expectations.

POSITIVE

This was some terrible football, as one might anticipate from a Jets vs. Panthers game.

All you had to know about the declining interest in the winless Jets at this point was the thousands of empty seats in MetLife Stadium on a Sunday with ideal football weather.

And they did not fall short of the low expectations in their 13–6 loss to the Panthers.

There was not a shred of FOMO among the fans who chose to remain at home and clean out their garages or rake leaves instead of using their purchased game tickets.

Nothing was missed.

Except for the one-week-too-late benching of starting Jets quarterback Justin Fields, who was replaced by veteran backup Tyrod Taylor after the first half with the offense utterly anemic.

And that didn’t work either.

The Jets, the only NFL team still without a victory, are 0–7. They’ve failed to score a touchdown in either of the past two games and they’re creeping perilously toward the dubious 0-17 watch.

Regarding being 0–7, Taylor remarked, “It’s difficult.”. “Believe me, we feel it more than anyone else. You know, we’re in it. We’re putting in our blood, sweat and tears, week in and week out, and ultimately it hasn’t resulted in a winning performance.

“This group is deserving of victory. Wins are also deserved by the players in this locker and the effort we put forth each and every week. “,”.

The Jets aren’t very good at scoring touchdowns, and winning requires you to score touchdowns.

Even head coach Aaron Glenn’s substitution at halftime for the quarterback didn’t help. Although Taylor appeared more like a serviceable NFL quarterback (10-of-22 for 126 yards), he threw two interceptions in the second half that kept the Jets from scoring.

In reference to the quarterback switch, Glenn stated, “We needed a spark.”. “I thought the time was right to do it.”. “.”.

And now?

Fields has more bad games than good ones. Additionally, Taylor didn’t really light up the yard.

“I’m not prepared to sit here and predict what will happen with our quarterbacks when it gets into next week,” Glenn remarked. I need to take a look at that. It should be obvious that we have a lot of offensive work ahead of us. All of us are aware of that. “,”.

The Jets finished the first half trailing 10-3, having accumulated 97 yards of offense.

Fields wasn’t much better at home on Sunday through 30 minutes after putting up a mediocre showing in last week’s 13-11 loss to the Broncos in London, which resulted in minus-10 net yards.

Due to three Carolina sacks for 21 yards in losses, he was 6-of-12 for 25 net passing yards in the first half. For those of you scoring at home, Fields had 15 net yards of passing going into the third quarter after six quarters.

When the Jets’ offense took the field for the first time in the third quarter, everyone’s eyes were on the sidelines to see if Glenn would have the gall to bring Fields back onto the field with the starting lineup.

Glenn didn’t send Fields back out in the third quarter, even though he was always there to support him.

Regarding Glenn’s choice to bench him, Fields remarked, “I can’t blame him.”. “We only scored like three points in the first half. So, it is what it is. That is life. Naturally, I wish things had gone a little differently for this team as well as for myself. “,”.

The Panthers converted the first drive of the second half into a 29-yard field goal, putting the Jets behind 13-3 when Taylor came on.

There appeared to be some hope on Taylor’s second possession until he threw a long pass to Josh Reynolds in the end zone, but this was intercepted by Panthers cornerback Jaycee Horn, who made an incredible one-handed pick and fell to the ground with 34 seconds left before the fourth quarter.

With 6:26 left in the game, Taylor then spearheaded the Jets to a 47-yard field goal from Nick Folk, cutting the Carolina lead to 13-6.

The Panthers offense, now led by 37-year-old Andy Dalton, who replaced starter Bryce Young after Young was sidelined with an ankle injury, was left to be stopped by the Jets defense.

With 4:41 left, the Jets defense gained possession of the ball and returned it to Taylor.

However, Horn once more picked Taylor off on the second play of the subsequent series when he attempted to make contact with Reynolds.

The Jets regained possession of the ball with 2:49 left and three timeouts remaining after their defense held Carolina to another three-and-out.

That series didn’t end well, either. The Jets went three and out and punted with three timeouts left, giving the ball back to Carolina with 1:44 left after Taylor was sacked for a 7-yard loss on the first play of the possession.

The Jets would never get the ball back.

And so ended another entirely dreary day of football on a beautiful fall day that warranted better.
