The Mona Lisa, the world’s most famous portrait, could get a room of its own in the Louvre, the museum’s president said.
Such a move would give visitors, many of whom visit the Louvre for the famous painting alone, a better experience, Laurence des Cars told the broadcaster France Inter.
She said: “It’s always frustrating when you don’t give visitors the best possible reception, and that is the case for the Mona Lisa.
A better solution seems necessary to me today,” adding that the Louvre was in contact with the culture ministry about potential solutions.
The Louvre, the world’s most popular museum, welcomed close to 9 million visitors in 2023.
The Mona Lisa hangs in the Louvre’s Salle des États (state room), the museum’s biggest, in a protective glass case, but Leonardo da Vinci’s masterwork is not alone there.
It is accompanied by works by 16th-century Venetian masters, and across the room hangs the Louvre’s biggest painting, The Wedding at Cana by Paolo Veronese.
The Mona Lisa was targeted by two environmental protesters in January, who hurled soup at the protrait, calling for “healthy and sustainable food”.

The president of the Louvre stated that the Mona Lisa, the most well-known portrait in the world, may get a room of its own.

According to Laurence des Cars, who spoke with the broadcaster France Inter, such a move would improve the experience for visitors—many of whom come to the Louvre just to see the famous painting.

“It’s always frustrating when you don’t give visitors the best reception, and that’s the case with the Mona Lisa,” the woman remarked. “I think we need a better solution now,” the statement continued, mentioning that the Louvre had discussed possible solutions with the ministry of culture.

The most visited museum in the world, the Louvre, saw nearly 9 million visitors in 2023.

According to Des Cars, 20,000 individuals per day, or 80% of the total, braved the throng to get a glimpse of the mysterious smile on the Mona Lisa, frequently snapping selfies in front of the artwork.

The largest state room in the Louvre is home to the Mona Lisa, which is kept in a glass case for protection. However, the Mona Lisa is not the only masterpiece housed there.

It is surrounded by pieces by Venetian masters from the 16th century, and the largest painting in the Louvre, Paolo Veronese’s The Wedding at Cana, is hanging across the room.

In January, two environmental protestors threw soup at the Mona Lisa while chanting for “healthy and sustainable food.”. Under bulletproof glass, the painting remained unharmed.
