Former US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi has had hip replacement surgery after injuring herself while on an official trip to Luxembourg, her office says.
“Earlier this morning, Speaker Emerita Pelosi underwent a successful hip replacement and is well on the mend,” her spokesman Ian Kreger said in a statement.
Pelosi thanked both US military staff at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany and medical staff at Hospital Kirchberg in Luxembourg.
“Speaker Pelosi is enjoying the overwhelming outpouring of prayers and well wishes and is ever determined to ensure access to quality health care for all Americans,” the statement added.
She first served as House speaker from 2007-11, a post second in line to the presidency after the vice-president, then regained the job in 2019 after her party took back control of the chamber.

After hurting herself during an official trip to Luxembourg, former US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi underwent hip replacement surgery, according to her office.

Ian Kreger, her spokesperson, said in a statement that Speaker Emerita Pelosi had a successful hip replacement earlier this morning and was recovering well.

The US military reportedly tripped and fell on stairs during an official event on Friday, sending Pelosi, 84, to a hospital in Germany via airlift.

In honor of the 80th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge, the California Democratic congresswoman was visiting Luxembourg with a bipartisan group of lawmakers.

Pelosi expressed gratitude to the medical staff at Hospital Kirchberg in Luxembourg as well as the US military personnel at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany.

The statement also said, “Speaker Pelosi is delighted by the tremendous amount of prayers and well wishes and is always committed to ensuring that all Americans have access to high-quality health care.”.

She withdrew from the remaining activities she had planned for the journey.

Earlier on Friday, Mr. Kreger said Pelosi was still working from the hospital and was looking forward to going back to the United States soon.

Along with military officials, veterans, and their families, the delegation she was traveling with in Luxembourg is expected to participate in anniversary events.

Congressman Michael McCaul, who is traveling with the delegation, expressed his disappointment that Pelosi would be unable to attend the delegation’s weekend events.

“However, she is strong, and I have no doubt that she will quickly get back on her feet,” the Republican from Texas stated.

Pelosi’s career spans seven presidential administrations, making her a major player in US politics.

Prior to her party regaining control of the House in 2019, she was the second-in-line for the presidency after the vice president. She first held the position from 2007 to 2011 as speaker of the House.

Although she left her position as Speaker in 2023, she is still a powerful voice in the Democratic Party and serves in the House.

She was elected to a two-year term again last month.

This week, she is not the only congresswoman hurt in a fall.

Mitch McConnell, the 82-year-old outgoing Senate minority leader, sustained cuts to his face and a sprained wrist at the US Capitol.
