Florida coach Billy Napier was fired Sunday despite a win over Mississippi State, seven games and four losses into another lackluster season in which the Gators slipped further behind the SEC’s top programs as his methodical build never turned the corner.
“Billy built a tremendous culture of accountability and growth among the young men he led each day,” athletic director Scott Stricklin said in a statement.
As Coach Napier has often said, this is a results-driven business, and while his influence was positive, it ultimately did not translate into the level of success we expect on the field.” Florida’s interim coach is receivers coach Billy Gonzales.
Florida hired Napier away from Louisiana, where he built a Sun Belt powerhouse that went 40-12 in four seasons, to replace Dan Mullen.
He was 3-10 against the Gators’ annual rivals: 0-3 against Georgia, 1-2 against Tennessee and Florida State and 1-3 against LSU.
Despite a victory over Mississippi State on Sunday, Florida coach Billy Napier was fired. Three games and four losses into another dreary season, the Gators fell further behind the SEC’s best programs as his methodical style of coaching never improved.
Although Napier had two unsuccessful seasons to begin his tenure at Florida, a 2024 run seemed to have the Gators headed in the right direction, and the school decided to extend his contract. His seven-year contract still had three full years left on it. He is owed roughly $21 million in buyout terms, with half of that amount due in 30 days and no offset clause in the event that he finds another job.
In a statement, athletic director Scott Stricklin said, “Billy created a fantastic culture of responsibility and development among the young men he led every day.”. His methodical and thorough approach made a significant difference at every level of our program. Although Coach Napier has frequently stated that this is a results-driven organization, his influence was ultimately insufficient to produce the caliber of success we anticipate on the field. “.”.
Billy Gonzales is the interim receivers coach for Florida. He joined Napier’s staff in 2023 after working as an Urban Meyer assistant on the Gators’ national championship teams in 2006 and 2008. He also co-coordinated the offense with Dan Mullen.
Despite starting the season ranked 15th in the AP Top 25, Florida, led by five-star sophomore quarterback DJ Lagway, had aspirations of making a run for the College Football Playoffs. However, a Week 2 home loss to USF put Napier back in the hot seat right away, and Lagway threw five interceptions in a two-score loss to LSU the following week.
No, an upset. 9 Texas was merely a brief respite as one of the most difficult schedules in the country persisted. His Gators lost to No. 34-17, fading. 5 Texas A&M; it was his 16th defeat with Gainesville away. He was jeered loudly at home during Saturday’s humiliating 23–21 victory over Mississippi State, which was his final game. With this week’s open date, Florida’s interim coach and the rest of the team have time to get used to their new surroundings before their rivalry matchup with Georgia next week.
To replace Dan Mullen, Florida hired Napier from Louisiana, where he established a Sun Belt powerhouse that finished 40-12 in four seasons.
Mullen was fired 11 games into his fourth season in 2021. As Florida’s coach, he had a 34-15 record and three trips to the New Year’s Six bowl, but Gainesville’s recruiting had slowed and minor issues had grown. After winning three national titles since 1996, the program was afraid Georgia and Alabama were catching up to it. Former Alabama assistant Nick Saban hired Napier to update a stale-looking program in an effort to close the gap in recruiting and on the field.
Instead, he went 22–23. Napier joined Will Muschamp, Jim McElwain, and Mullen as the fourth Florida coach to fail to lead the Gators for four consecutive seasons since two-time national champion Urban Meyer resigned following the 2010 campaign.
At Florida, Napier’s winning percentage of.489 is the lowest of all the Gators’ non-interim coaches since 1945. Additionally, Napier was never able to match his predecessors’ appearances in the SEC championship game or the major bowl. His record against the Gators’ yearly rivals was 3-10: 1-3 against LSU, 1-2 against Tennessee and Florida State, and 0-3 against Georgia. Napier was 0-2 against Miami as well, including a 26-7 loss in September when Florida only managed 61 passing yards, the fewest since the 2014 loss to South Carolina that resulted in Will Muschamp’s termination.
Disarray and the kind of self-inflicted mistakes Napier was hired to correct plagued his teams. The Gators were flagged for spitting on a USF player during Florida’s game-ending drive, had at least four touchdowns this season that were ruled invalid by penalties, including a 60-yarder on Saturday, had two players wear the same number on a punt return against Utah in 2023, and repeatedly failed to field 11 special teams players, including this year at Miami.
