What is the reason for Emilia Pérez’s exclusion from the Oscar Campaign?

Tampa Bay Times

This week, Emilia Pérez best actress Oscar nominee Karla Sofía Gascón was expected to fly in to Los Angeles from her home in Spain for a busy week awards campaigning.
The others set to be feted include her costar Gomez and fellow best actress nominees Fernanda Torres (I’m Still Here).
Tensions are said to be high between Gascón and the streamer, which has invested millions in the film’s awards push.
It was flourishing as recently as Jan. 23, when the film received a field-leading 13 Oscar nominations, just one shy of the all-time record.
Gascón has already been removed from email-blasts and ad-reads promoting the film for awards.

For a hectic week of award campaigning, Emilia Pérez’s best actress Oscar nominee Karla Sofía Gascón was scheduled to fly into Los Angeles from her home in Spain this week.

On Thursday, Feb. The AFI Awards luncheon, a glamorous event at the Four Seasons in Beverly Hills where each of the AFI’s top 10 films and top 10 TV shows of the previous year have a table and there is a lot of mingling, was where she was supposed to sit with her writer/director, Jacques Audiard, and costars, Selena Gomez and Zoe Saldaña.

The night of Friday, February. 7. She would have met up with her colleagues again at the Critics Choice Awards, at a table in the middle of Santa Monica’s Barker Hangar, a massive venue that will be crammed with dozens of journalists who are looking for quotes and selfies in addition to other nominees.

Saturday, February. 8 created a conundrum for many talented people: Emilia Pérez is nominated for both the top awards of the Directors Guild Awards and the Producers Guild Awards, which are held in opposition to one another. Gascón was assigned to present at the PGA Awards, which would be held at the Fairmont Century Plaza hotel in Century City.

Next is Sunday, February. In order to be honored as one of the nine Virtuoso Award winners this year, she was supposed to have driven up to Santa Barbara for a ceremony at the Arlington Theatre. The honorees would be interviewed one-on-one and then as a group. Her co-star, Gomez, and fellow best actress nominee Fernanda Torres (I’m Still Here) will also be honored.

But given the intense controversy that has surrounded Gascón lately over comments she made on X (formerly Twitter), which Gascón has been discussing in interviews and writing about on social media in recent days without consulting or coordinating with Netflix, which owns Emilia Pérez’s distribution rights in the US, Canada, and the UK, The Hollywood Reporter has learned that she will not be visiting the city at all.

Gascón and the streamer, who has spent millions on the movie’s award campaign, are reportedly at odds. Just as recently as January, it was thriving. 23 when the movie was just one nomination away from breaking the record with a field-high 13 Oscars. The Gascón revelations, however, have put it on life support at the most inconvenient time.

It is now alleged that the only way the two parties communicate is through Jeremy Barber of UTA, Gascón’s agent. Furthermore, from what I understand, Netflix has little interest in offering an Oscar candidate the customary courtesy of a studio, including lodging and transportation, to enable her to attend the remaining award season events.

There are other people who want to distance themselves from Gascón besides the streamer. Others who were scheduled to attend some of the aforementioned events with the actress, like the Santa Barbara Film Festival event, have told THR that they may have to cancel their plans if she didn’t cancel hers. They were worried that things might become awkward with her there.

The Goya Awards, Spain’s Oscars, will be held on Saturday, and Gascón might still go to award season events closer to home. She can get herself to those events, and some of her behavior is not as problematic in Europe as it is in the US. And she might decide to do so since she is battling for her job’s future.

Meanwhile, on Tuesday, February, the last round of Oscar voting will start. 11. It’s obvious that Netflix is working to keep Emilia Pérez’s other nominees out of the Gascón debris field, particularly Saldaña, who has been the clear favorite in her category and is nominated for best supporting actress.

It’s still possible that Gascón’s partners will have to stand in front of microphones this weekend to accept top honors at the Critics Choice Awards, whose voting ended weeks ago in January. 10) and the PGA Awards (the ballots for which ended in January). 30, at the same time that Gascón’s tweets were becoming public. It will be interesting to observe whether and how they handle her absence if they do.
