Amazon MGM Studios‘ Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans Christmas action movie, Red One, is crossing $100M at the global box office tomorrow.
That Tuesday take isn’t that far from what Johnson’s Rampage did on its first Tuesday –$3.4M– however, that movie crossed $100M stateside on a very long theatrical window.
Originally, Amazon greenlit the movie as a streaming title before pivoting to a big screen release.
The hope is for Red One to ease -55% in weekend 2, or $14.4M.
Christmas movies pre-Covid can do anywhere between a 3x to 5x multiple off their box office openings.

In the United States, the film fell short of weekend projections. S. /Canada box, which posted a strong Tuesday of $3.1M, up +87 percent from Monday’s $1.66M. Although that Tuesday’s performance isn’t all that different from Johnson’s Rampage’s first Tuesday performance ($3.4M), the film made over $100M in the US over a very long theatrical run. Red One’s take on Tuesday was also higher than IF’s $2.86M on Tuesday. $1 point 4 million was made on Wednesday, and $1 point 2 million is anticipated to be made today. Warner Bros. is in charge of the $55 million offshore cume currently running on the $200 million to $250 million film. Amazon first approved the film for streaming before changing its mind and releasing it in theaters. According to Amazon insiders, Red One will benefit the online retailer and streaming service if it can recoup its $100 million global PandA expenses.
With the release of Paul Mescal’s Gladiator II, directed by Ridley Scott, and Universal’s Wicked Part One, starring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, Red One will undoubtedly encounter challenges in theaters this weekend. Fan screenings of Wicked have already taken place on Mondays and Wednesdays. In its domestic premiere weekend, Wicked may earn between $130M and $150M, while Gladiator II is expected to make at least $60M. Two days ago, we heard that Wicked’s pre-sales had reached an incredible $30 million. In weekend two, Red One is expected to ease -55 percent, or $14.4M.
Despite being criticized by critics, Red One’s A- CinemaScore indicates that it is playable. Before COVID, the box office openings of Christmas films could be anywhere from three to five times higher. They didn’t have a streaming window to anticipate at that point, though.
