Jacques Audiard’s “Emilia Pérez,” a Spanish-language music-thriller that was picked up by Netflix in Cannes, has emerged ahead of the race with slots in 15 categories, including best film, director, leading actress and three in the supporting actress list.
Meanwhile “Conclave,” Focus Features’ Papal mystery-thriller from Edward Berger set within the Vatican, has 14, including best film, director and leading actor for Ralph Fiennes.
Further down, a tight pack of films includes “The Substance,” “The Brutalist” and “A Complete Unknown” on 11 lists, “Wicked” and “Dune: Part Two” on 10 and “Anora” and “Gladiator 2” on nine.
All, with the exception of “Gladiator 2,” are on the best film longlist.
A new addition for BAFTA this year is the children’s and family film category.
Two quite different thrillers are at the top of the longlist of features for the 2024 BAFTA Film Awards, according to the British Academy’s announcement of the results of the first round of voting in all 25 categories.
With slots in 15 categories, including best film, director, leading actress, and three supporting actress categories, Netflix’s Spanish-language music-thriller “Emilia Pérez,” directed by Jacques Audiard, has risen to the top of the competition. Meanwhile, “Conclave,” a papal mystery-thriller by Edward Berger that takes place in the Vatican, has fourteen awards, including best director, best film, and best actor for Ralph Fiennes.
The films “The Substance,” “The Brutalist,” and “A Complete Unknown” are listed on eleven lists, “Wicked” and “Dune: Part Two” are listed on ten, and “Anora” and “Gladiator 2” are listed on nine. All of them are on the list of the best movies, except for “Gladiator 2.”. Denzel Washington, who has never before received a BAFTA nomination, was given a supporting actor slot, but Ridley Scott’s spectacular comeback to the coliseum also lost out on best director and leading man.
Belfast should be proud because “Kneecap,” a boisterous Irish-language music biopic that is easily one of the lowest budgeted movies competing, managed to compete with big studio releases and earn seven longlist spots, including best film. Additionally, Sebastian Stan’s “The Apprentice,” which won six awards, including best film and leading actor, had a successful day at work.
While it may not come as a huge surprise to many that “Gladiator 2” did not make it into the majority of the top categories, “Maria,” which was left out entirely (and just days before Angelina Jolie attends the Golden Globes as a leading actress nominee), will undoubtedly raise eyebrows. In addition, Pedro Almodovar’s Venice-winning film “The Room Next Door” had absolutely no room. Similar to Jolie, Tilda Swinton is nominated for a Golden Globe for best actress, and many people might have thought that her fellow Brits would at least have included her on the BAFTA longlist.
Luca Guadagnino’s “Challengers” (original screenplay and editing) and Jesse Eisenberg’s critically acclaimed comedy-drama “A Real Pain” only managed two longlist spots (best supporting actor for Kieran Culkin and original screenplay) despite the last stage awards season’s fervor for the film. In the meantime, “Nickel Boys,” another industry hit, only managed one longlist spot (adapted screenplay).
The children’s and family film category is a new addition to BAFTA this year. Unsurprisingly, there was a lot of overlap with animated movies, as evidenced by the inclusion of films like “The Wild Robot,” “That Christmas,” and “Wallace and Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl” on both longlists. However, many may view “Paddington in Peru” as an unexpected omission from a debut family and children’s lineup that also includes “Young Woman and the Sea” and “Kensuke’s Kingdom.” The eagerly anticipated third feature about the Peruvian bear only makes an appearance in the category of outstanding British films.
January will see the announcement of the complete list of nominees. fifteen (not including the BAFTA Rising Star finalists, who will be announced in January). February 7), with the BAFTA Film Awards ceremony scheduled for February. sixteen from the Royal Festival Hall in London. David Tennant, star of “Doctor Who,” will host again.
