Saturday Night Live alumna Laraine Newman, and mother to Hacks star Hannah Einbinder, slammed the inclusion of The Bear in the Emmys comedy category ahead of last night’s ceremony in since-deleted posts made on X.
“Every time I think about ‘The Bear’ being in the comedy category for the Emmys I can feel an ulcer developing,” she wrote ahead of the 76th annual show.
She added later during the telecast, once the FX series had broken its own record for most wins in a single season for a comedy (with 11), “F—.
BEAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
!” The veteran actress and comedian has since removed these posts.
Despite her impassioned initial writing, Newman is not alone in critiquing the decorated series and Emmys bylaws for The Bear‘s classification as a comedy.
Critics and fans alike have engaged in such discourse previously, particularly at January’s delayed Emmys ceremony, which saw The Bear post its original record of ten nods.
She added, in response to a commenter, “I know.
Not my best moment,” in reference to her previous posts.
Doubling down, she told another, “I regret that post and I think the actress who won is wonderful in that role.
Prior to last night’s ceremony, Laraine Newman, a former cast member of Saturday Night Live and mother of Hacks star Hannah Einbinder, attacked the decision to include The Bear in the comedy category of the Emmy Awards in posts that have since been removed from X.
Prior to the 76th annual show, she wrote, “Every time I think about ‘The Bear’ being in the comedy category for the Emmys, I can feel an ulcer developing.”. Later in the broadcast, after the FX series had surpassed its own record for the most wins for a comedy in a single season (11), she continued, “F—. THE. BEAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Afterwards, the seasoned comedian and actress deleted these comments.
Newman’s criticism of the highly acclaimed series and the Emmys bylaws regarding The Bear’s classification as a comedy is not unique, despite her passionate initial writing. Such discussions have previously taken place, especially during the postponed Emmy Awards ceremony in January, where The Bear achieved its first-ever record of ten nominations, drawing criticism from both fans and critics. Even last night’s Emmys monologue featured a joke about the topic, as co-hosts Dan and Eugene Levy said, “I know some of you might be expecting us to make a joke about whether The Bear is a comedy, but in true spirit of The Bear we will not be making any jokes.” The debate has generated a lot of online discussion and countless think pieces. “.
“The Bear, in my opinion, is a fantastic show, but it’s not a comedy—not even a dark comedy,” Newman remarked.
In reply to a commenter, she continued, saying, “I know. It was removed by me. Not my best moment,” she said, alluding to her earlier posts. She later said to someone else, “I regret that post and I think the actress who won is wonderful in that role.”. On the other hand, I feel that the other participants in the different categories that were defeated by The Bear were stolen. Liza Colón-Zayas defeated Carol Burnett (Palm Royale), Meryl Streep (Only Murders in the Building), Janelle James and Sheryl Lee Ralph from Abbott Elementary, as well as Einbinder, to win the Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series.
