In relation to last week’s knife attack on Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan, police in the Indian city of Mumbai have detained a man.

In a shocking attack, Khan, one of India’s biggest stars, was stabbed at home by an intruder. After surgery, he is recuperating.

The main suspect, Mohammad Shariful Islam Shehzad, was detained by police on Sunday. They said that Shehzad was a Bangladeshi national who was unlawfully in India.

He is not from Bangladesh, according to Mr. Shehzad’s attorney, who has refuted the accusations.

According to the police, Mr. Shehzad was taken into custody from Thane, a district on the outskirts of Mumbai.

Mumbai police deputy commissioner Dixit Gedam told a press conference that preliminary evidence indicates he arrived in the city approximately six months ago and had been working at a housekeeping agency under a false identity and identification.

Mr. Gedam said that police believe Mr. Shehzad broke into Khan’s house with the goal of robbing him.

A Mumbai court sentenced Mr. Shehzad to five days in police custody on Sunday.

According to Sandeep Shikhane, his attorney, his client is being used as a “scapegoat.”.

“If he is a citizen of Bangladesh, there is no documentary proof,” he stated.

Mumbai is the financial capital and one of the most populous cities in India. The attack on Khan has garnered national attention and sparked concerns about safety and security in the city.

Khan was attacked at his home in a posh neighborhood, where he was stabbed six times and sustained multiple injuries, including one on the back of his neck.

The police were told last week by Eliyama Philip, a nurse who works in Khan’s home, that she was in the child’s room with the nanny when she first saw the shadow of a man close to the bathroom door late at night.

A man reportedly showed up with a long blade in one hand and a wooden object in the other, warning the two not to make any noise, according to Ms. Philip. She said he asked for 10 million rupees ($115,477; £94,511).

There was an altercation, and Ms. Philip was hurt. She added that Khan and his wife hurried to the room after hearing the disturbance and that the assailant stabbed the actor with a blade before running away.

At least five other individuals were reportedly detained by investigators on Friday for questioning related to the investigation, but were later released.

A number of the men were arrested due to their resemblance to the assailant, who was caught on CCTV as he was leaving the building.
