Nikki Glaser on Hosting the 2025 Golden Globes, Learning From Jo Koy Bombing and Roasting ‘Emilia Pérez’: ‘I Don’t Even Know What I Was Watching’

Variety

I just know it’ll be killer.” So what is the Nikki Glaser take on the Golden Globes?
Is your critique that “The Bear” shouldn’t be considered a comedy, given that it’s not particularly jokey?
That’s something that’s been tackled by other shows; the Emmys had a couple really good jokes about that.
Then, because of the subject matter — there are certain things that culturally, we’ve all decided we don’t joke about.
Last year, Jo Koy was the host, and viewers could tell on TV he wasn’t a hit in the room.

NEGATIVE

On the most important night of her career, Nikki Glaser is prepared.

The stand-up has been chosen to host the 2025 Golden Globes following a successful 2024 in which she garnered accolades for her HBO comedy special “Someday You’ll Die” and dominated the conversation for her scathing performance on Netflix’s “The Roast of Tom Brady.”. Before May’s Brady roast, Glaser had been in the comedy trenches. With a smirkingly abashed delivery, she criticized the football legend for his failed relationships and for postponing his retirement.

Now, she’s hosting the most boisterous room during awards season. Although there is a lot of potential for success, there are also risks. For example, Jo Koy’s offensive joke about Barbie’s breasts last year caused her to lose her job, and Ricky Gervais and Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, the hosts, became famously linked with the Globes through their numerous appearances. About three weeks before January, I was speaking in New York. Glaser states, “I feel really ready,” at the 5 ceremony. I have a feeling it will be deadly. “.”.

But what is the Nikki Glaser interpretation of the Golden Globes, and how does it differ from previous interpretations?

My attitude toward the Globes is, “What are we doing here?” We’re acting as though each of you is a Nobel Prize nominee. I don’t believe I can express my feelings about some of these nominees, who I don’t believe deserve it, as honestly as I would like to. That’s the debate my writing team is having: Will this work? Can we make fun of “The Bear,” or will “The Bear” take itself too seriously? It’s all about determining where the line is.

Do you think that because “The Bear” isn’t very funny, it shouldn’t be classified as a comedy?

Other shows have addressed that topic; the Emmys featured a few excellent jokes about it. It’s been completed. You don’t want to beat a dead bear with the same jokes, so I’m attempting to view it from a different perspective. What else can be said about “The Bear”?

Have you been viewing the films this year?

Yes, I have seen “Conclave” twice. The best actor is Ralph Fiennes. It’s a slow, dark film, and I fell asleep a lot during the first viewing, but I still think it’s one of my all-time favorites. I am not even certain what I was watching, but I saw “Emilia Pérez.”. Then someone says, “It’s French.”. I then say, “Oh, all right. This brings to mind the opening ceremony in Paris. “.”.

Because there is a lot of fodder there, that one is enjoyable. Initially, it has not been widely viewed. Then, due to the subject matter, we have all decided as a culture not to joke about some things. It’s delicate. So, while it’s challenging, I’m up for the challenge.

Then “Wicked,” which is the one we’re attempting to perfect. It has that “Eras Tour” vibe. As a Swiftie, I don’t approve of any jokes made about Taylor Swift, so I want to honor the fandom rather than disparage it. Those who are so devoted to “Wicked” can relate to me. However, having “Wicked,” which everyone has seen, is really nice.

What more is there? I have been discussing “A Complete Unknown.”. People say things like, “Huh?” or “Nightbitch.”. People ask, “What’s that?” because it’s somewhat startling. I have to give a brief overview of the plot because the people at home are unfamiliar with these movies.

When Jo Koy hosted last year, viewers could see on TV that he wasn’t popular. Remember how he joked about “Barbie”?

Oh, I do recall.

I want to know if you learned anything from watching that.

As a comedian, it taught me how important it is to contextualize yourself to the room. Although we comedians would prefer to be viewed similarly to these celebrities, we simply aren’t. Had he told his audience, “Who am I?” it would have been much more effective. “He’s a guy that kills harder than anyone I’ve seen kill before,” he said. I believe he assumed that would be the atmosphere there. It was also somewhat naive.

On the other hand, I’m going the other way and making sure that people are introduced to me before I start making jokes about them.

You’re in a humorous position because you’re nominated in a stand-up comedy category as well. You’re disparaging the evening’s vapidity, but winning would undoubtedly feel like a huge honor, surely?

Indeed, you have a strong affection for me. This was my Sally Field moment. I simply adore being nominated, though. In addition to my Grammy nomination, I received an Emmy nomination. I didn’t take home an Emmy. Who knows if I’ll succeed? Simply put, I think the nomination is fantastic. Winning is not something I enjoy. It keeps me going when I’m hungry and in close proximity.

Also, I will discuss the recent events after my category. Losing is even more hilarious.

You were performing in New England just this past weekend. Does practicing your monologue while traveling give you an advantage?

It’s a huge advantage! Ricky is a stand-up comedian, so he is familiar with the club scene. I’m sure he could have figured it out. Additionally, Jo Koy had the option to do so as well, though I’m not sure he did. Although I know from doing roasts that this is a part of my process, I’m sure some people are concerned about the jokes getting out.

The cool thing is that I already know I’ll be killing at home because I know how the jokes affect regular people. A part of me will say, “Well, the people in Burlington, Vermont, are going crazy,” even if it doesn’t make it into the room. “”.

Does the mere challenge of needleing a notoriously difficult celebrity appeal to you?

We all know some people who don’t find humor in themselves, so if I make them laugh, it signals to the others in the room that it’s okay to laugh. “”.

It is unlikely that my joke, “The camera is going to be on you,” will make it into the final monologue. Expert advice: Just chuckle. The audience at home will like you much more if you do this. I don’t know why publicists haven’t informed them of this. Laughing at a joke about yourself makes you appear cool, gregarious, and approachable. My goal is to assist you. This way, you can appear relatable without playing Hip-Hop Hopscotch with Jimmy Fallon.

You’re an enormous fan of Taylor Swift. Could she possibly be mentioned in your monologue?

Not unless there is a very good reason for it. I would have loved to see her in the audience this year, as she attended the Golden Globes last year. I’ve seen her so many times that I’m hoping this ends up becoming a gig I can do repeatedly and perform for her.

You saw “The Eras Tour” how many times?

There are twenty-two.

Swiftie numerology’s big number.

The Vienna shows were canceled, so it was originally set for 24. Therefore, it worked out well for me to receive the number 22.

Are you dating Swift?

After “The Red Tour,” I got to know her, but I wasn’t yet a Swiftie. She was very pleasant and normal when I met her backstage. It wasn’t as simple as posing beside her without looking at her; we had a brief exchange.

However, I’m content to remain a fan. It would be strange to be friends with me; I think I like her too much. I haven’t made an effort to meet her as of yet. I want it to take place organically.

Amy Poehler and Tina Fey performed this show four times, while Ricky Gervais performed it five times. Do you want to return then?

I wish to have this. Going from town to town is a big part of being a stand-up comedian. I adore live, high-pressure television, and I think it would be great to perform annually for a while. Therefore, I won’t need to be persuaded to continue doing this gig year after year.

Conan O’Brien has been announced to host the Oscars this year; despite the fact that these shows seem so different, they both lean heavily toward comedy.

Since the Oscars are the Oscars, the Globes don’t take themselves nearly as seriously. It has more celebrity support and financial backing. I hope I get a gig for that in the future. Although many people watch the Golden Globes, the Oscars deserve a dance routine and a musical number. What Conan does with it is something I’m very interested in seeing. He’s at a stage in his career where he’s taking chances, such as when he performed “Hot Ones,” which was the most stunning and chaotic thing I’ve ever seen.

What will your metric be for determining whether your hosting gig is successful?

The following day, Howard [Stern] will be completely honest with me. Actually, though, I don’t read anything. I’ll know based on what I learned from the Tom Brady roast. When I finished speaking, the stage manager said, “You killed.”. The crew was like, “Oh my God,” when I passed the stage. I knew when the camera and sound crews were mouthing the words “You killed.”.
