Three years following Cher and Bono’s formal marriage, the incident took place in 1972. When Cher and Bono first met in 1962, they were 16 and 27, respectively; they were married informally in 1964. The pair was extremely well-known at the time because of their many hit songs and their popular variety TV program, The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour. Success in the workplace, however, did not translate into personal fulfillment.
According to Cher’s book, she started to feel “trapped” in their marriage because of Bono’s domineering behavior. Cher recalled, at the age of 26, standing on the balcony of her hotel in Vegas: “I was dizzy with loneliness.”. I observed how simple it would be to cross the line and just vanish. There wasn’t anything else I could think of for a few crazy minutes. Five or six times, I did this. “.”.
Cher claimed that thinking about her family and the worry that “things like this could make people who look up to me feel that it’s a viable solution” prevented her from carrying it out. Cher added that she had a particularly significant epiphany as a result of her time in Vegas.
She wrote: “I don’t have to jump off.”. “I can just walk away from him. Shortly after, Cher and Bono split up, filed for divorce in 1974, and completed their divorce the following year. ).
