The Raiders liked enough of what they saw from running back Ashton Jeanty to make him the sixth overall pick in this year’s draft, but there is one tweak they’d like to see him make.
During an interview with Kay Adams at the NFLPA Rookie Premiere event, Jeanty shared a conversation with offensive coordinator Chip Kelly about trying something different in the NFL.
Kelly wants Jeanty to get low, which he demonstrated while sharing how the exchange played out.
“What’s crazy is Chip Kelly comes up to me the first day of rookie mini-camp.
He was like, ‘Have you ever played basketball?’ Yeah, I’ve played basketball.
Running back Ashton Jeanty was selected sixth overall by the Raiders this year because they were satisfied with his performance, but they would like to see him make one change.
In the backfield at Boise State, Jeanty would stand straight up and wait for pictures with his hands by his sides, striking a pose that some compared to Michael Myers from the Halloween films. In an interview with Kay Adams at the NFLPA Rookie Premiere event, Jeanty mentioned that she had discussed trying something new in the NFL with Chip Kelly, the offensive coordinator.
While describing the exchange, Jeanty showed that he was getting high, as Kelly had requested.
“You know,” Jeanty said, “sometimes you just have to go with the flow.”. It is absurd that on the first day of rookie mini-camp, Chip Kelly approaches me. He asked if I had ever played basketball, and I replied that I had. I’m able to dunk. He was holding the ball when he said, “Show me how you can guard me.” He then added, “That’s precisely why you need to be down in your running back stance.”. For the moment, he prevailed. At some point, I will attempt to convince him. I must first earn my stripes by making some plays. But it won’t be the end, in my opinion. “.”.
Though it appears to be where Kelly wants to start, Jeanty’s stance is only one aspect of his success as he moves from college to the NFL.
