The Pro Max version of Apple’s beloved iPhone tends to be first in line for significant redesigns and upgrades, but Apple’s rumored metalens technology, which promises to significantly shrink the size of the Dynamic Island, could come to all four iPhone 17 models.
Previously, Pu said only the iPhone 17 Pro Max would get this design change, but now he’s changed his tune and claims all four iPhones will incorporate metalens technology.
That lines Apple up to shrink the Dynamic Island by extension, an upgrade iPhone owners have been calling for since the introduction of Apple’s selfie camera spot.
Though its dimensions on the iPhone 17 and what kind of size difference we can expect remain up in the air.

The Pro Max model of Apple’s popular iPhone usually gets major redesigns and upgrades first, but all four iPhone 17 models may get the company’s rumored metalens technology, which promises to drastically reduce the size of the Dynamic Island.
In a research note that was initially seen by 9to5Mac this week, Jeff Pu, an analyst at GF Securities, made the prediction. Pu has since changed his mind and stated that metalens technology will be incorporated into all four iPhone models, whereas previously he stated that this design change would only be made to the iPhone 17 Pro Max.
For those who are unfamiliar, metalens are flat lenses that direct light toward the image sensor using metasurfaces. It is a significant improvement over the curved lenses found in the majority of phones.
Apple is rumored to be using a metalens for Face ID, which combines the transmitter and receiver components to make the device thinner and smaller overall. As a result, Apple will be able to reduce the size of Dynamic Island, which is an improvement that iPhone users have been demanding since the company’s selfie camera announcement. However, it is still unclear what the iPhone 17’s dimensions will be and what kind of size difference we can anticipate.
Since its initial release with the iPhone 14 Pro, the Dynamic Island—which displays Live Activities and houses the front camera and Face ID sensors—has stayed about the same size. Although it is not anticipated until at least the iPhone 18, Apple is rumored to eventually move Face ID completely beneath the display.
Keep in mind that all of this is still up for speculation. The Dynamic Island’s dimensions will stay “largely unchanged” with Apple’s next iPhone line, according to a January statement made by another Apple analyst, Ming-Chi Kuo. We’ll have to wait and see which leaker’s predictions come true because both have a history of providing accurate information about Apple’s product lineup.
Until Apple’s official launch event, which is anticipated to take place in September if history is to be believed, we won’t know for sure. Meanwhile, make sure to visit our iPhone 17 hub to see all the most recent rumors and news.
