As you may have expected in a game between the Jets and Panthers, this was some dreadful football.
And their performance, in a 13-6 loss to the Panthers, did not fail to meet the low expectations.
Except for the one-week-too-late benching of starting Jets quarterback Justin Fields, who was replaced by veteran backup Tyrod Taylor after the first half with the offense utterly anemic.
CHECK OUT THE LATEST NFL STANDINGS AND JETS STATS “We needed a spark,’’ Glenn said of the quarterback change.
Despite his unwavering support of Fields, Glenn didn’t send him back out in the third quarter.
This was some terrible football, as one might anticipate from a Jets vs. Panthers game.
All you needed to know about the declining interest in the winless Jets at this point was the thousands of empty seats in MetLife Stadium on a Sunday with ideal football weather.
And they did not fall short of the low expectations in their 13–6 loss to the Panthers.
Not one fan experienced even the slightest bit of FOMO when they chose to forgo their game tickets in favor of staying at home and cleaning out their garages or raking leaves.
They didn’t miss anything.
Except for starting Jets quarterback Justin Fields being benched a week too late and being replaced by veteran backup Tyrod Taylor after the first half, when the offense was completely flat.
And that didn’t help either.
The Jets are currently the only NFL team without a win at 0–7. They are dangerously approaching the questionable 0-17 record after failing to score a touchdown in either of the last two games.
Regarding being 0–7, Taylor remarked, “It’s difficult.”. Nobody feels it more than we do, I promise. We are, after all, in it. Week after week, we’re giving it our all, but in the end, it hasn’t produced a successful performance.
“This team is worthy of victory. Wins are also deserved by the players in this locker and the effort we put forth each and every week. “,”.
In order to win, you need to score touchdowns, and the Jets aren’t very good at it.
Head coach Aaron Glenn’s substitution at halftime for the quarterback didn’t help either. Taylor appeared more like a serviceable NFL quarterback (10-of-22 for 126 yards), but he stopped the Jets from scoring in the second half with two interceptions.
Take a look at the most recent NFL standings and Jets statistics.
In reference to the quarterback switch, Glenn stated, “We needed a spark.”. “I thought the moment was right. “.”.
What comes next?
Fields has more bad games than good ones. Taylor, however, didn’t really light up the yard.
Glenn remarked, “I’m not prepared to sit here and predict what will happen with our quarterbacks when it gets into next week.”. I need to take a look at that. It should be obvious that we have a lot of offensive work ahead of us. All of us are aware of that. “.”.
After gaining 97 yards of offensive yardage, the Jets ended the first half behind 10-3.
After a lackluster showing that resulted in minus-10 net yards in the Broncos’ 13-11 loss in London last week, Fields didn’t do much better at home on Sunday for the first half.
Three Carolina sacks for 21 yards in losses helped him go 6-of-12 for 25 net passing yards in the first half. Fields had 15 net yards of passing in six quarters going into the third quarter, for those of you who are scoring at home.
When the Jets’ offense took the field for the first time in the third quarter, everyone’s eyes were on the sidelines to see if Glenn would have the gall to bring Fields back onto the field with the starting lineup.
Glenn didn’t send Fields back out in the third quarter, even though he was always there to support him.
About Glenn’s choice to bench him, Fields remarked, “I can’t blame him.”. “We only managed to score about three points during the first half. That’s what it is, then. That’s life. Naturally, I wish things had gone a little differently for this team as well as for myself. “,”.
The Panthers converted the first drive of the second half into a 29-yard field goal, putting the Jets behind 13-3 when Taylor came on.
With 34 seconds left before the fourth quarter, Taylor’s second possession appeared to have some chance until he threw a long pass to Josh Reynolds in the end zone, but Panthers cornerback Jaycee Horn intercepted it and made an incredible one-handed pick, sending Reynolds to the ground.
With six minutes left in the game, Taylor then guided the Jets to a field goal from Nick Folk, 47 yards out, which reduced the Carolina lead to 13-6.
When starter Bryce Young was sidelined due to an ankle injury, Andy Dalton, now 37, took over as the Panthers’ offensive leader, and it was up to the Jets defense to stop him.
With 4:41 left, the Jets defense held and recovered the ball for Taylor.
However, Horn again picked Taylor off on the second play of the subsequent series when he attempted to make contact with Reynolds.
With two minutes and forty-nine seconds left, the Jets regained possession of the ball after their defense held Carolina to another three-and-out.
And that series didn’t end well. The Jets went three-and-out and punted with three timeouts left, giving the ball back to Carolina with 1:44 left after Taylor was sacked for a 7-yard loss on the first play of the possession.
The Jets would never regain possession of the ball.
Thus came to an end yet another dreary football day on a lovely fall day that deserved better.
