A powerful 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck central Colombia early Sunday, sending residents, the U.S. Geological Survey said.
The Colombian Geological Service reported additional tremors with magnitudes ranging from 4 to 4.6 that occurred in the same area minutes later.
Images posted on social media showed people in Bogota who felt the tremor — some left their workplaces to seek safety.
“It was a big scare,” 54-year-old Carlos Alberto Ruiz, who left his Bogota apartment with his wife, son and dog, told AFP.
Colombia lies in the Pacific Ring of Fire, a region known for frequent seismic and volcanic activity.

Moments later, more tremors in the same region with magnitudes ranging from 4 to 4.6 were reported by the Colombian Geological Service.
It was evaluating the situation in a number of municipalities, the National Unit for Disaster Risk Management announced on X.
Social media users shared pictures of Bogota residents who experienced the tremor; some fled their places of employment in search of safety. Rural footage showed no damage.
Carlos Alberto Ruiz, 54, who left his Bogota apartment with his wife, son, and dog, told AFP, “It was a big scare.”.
“We haven’t felt it this strongly here in Bogota in a long time,” Francisco Gonzalez, a lawyer who also left his home, said.
Colombia is located in the Pacific Ring of Fire, an area that experiences a lot of volcanic and seismic activity.
