FRIDAY AM UPDATE, after exclusive: Lionsgate is reporting $3.75M for the previews to Thunder Road’s John Wick spinoff Ballerina.
The Rotten Tomatoes audience score stands at 93%, equal to 2023’s John Wick: Chapter 4‘s which is best in the Keanu Reeves franchise.
Ballerina‘s audience score also is higher than previous solo femme action movies Furiosa (88%, 2024) and Alita: Battle Angel (91%, 2019).
Essentially, the thinking is to comp Ballerina to female solo action movies instead of John Wick movies.
Female solo action movies are a completely different subgenre and don’t always attract the full-on male audience that typically attends an action movie with a male leading star.
FRIDAY EARLY EVENING: Lionsgate hopes that Ballerina could reach $30 million at 3,409 theaters, although many currently have it in the mid-$20 million range.
No distribution company wants to see a highly successful film perform poorly. We need every victory possible. Ballerina is rated R, and people who watch that kind of film usually do so at night. The difficult part is that this spinoff started tracking three weeks ago at $35M+, so it would be great if it eased to the mid-$20Ms. Friday is just under $11M, including $3.5M previews.
There are just under 1,000 PLF auditoriums in Ballerina.

This male-skewed action film follows Paramount/Skydance’s Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, which has a strong hold on Imax screens and is expected to finish third with $14M (-49 percent) at 3,496 in the third weekend of a packed summer. That is superior to the $10.6M third session of Dead Reckoning. The running cume is $148.2M by Sunday.
No, as we have stated throughout the week. Disney is losing because Lilo and Stitch is making between $32 million and $34 million in its third weekend at 4,185 theaters, following a third Friday showing of $9 million to $10 million. Running cume ranges from $335 million to $337 million.
Karate Kid: Legends from Sony comes in fourth place with 3,859 sites. The picture is -56 percent, with $2.3M on its second Friday and a second weekend in the $9M range. $35 point 7 million is the ten-day running cume.
The Phoenician Scheme, which expanded from six locations in NYC and L to a second weekend wide expansion, comes in fifth. A. . to 1,678 theaters with a second weekend of $5.7M and a second Friday of $2.5M. Wes Anderson’s Asteroid City, which came in at $9 million in 2023, is currently higher than his second weekend. We’ll see how this develops. Four stars, 81 percent positive, and a good 62 percent of people under 35—mostly men at 57 percent—definitely recommend it.
FRIDAY AM UPDATE: Following the exclusive, Lionsgate reports that the Ballerina previews for Thunder Road’s John Wick spinoff will cost $375 million. The figure is from the Wednesday and Thursday performances.
With an audience score of 93 percent, it is tied for the highest rating in the Keanu Reeves franchise with 2023’s John Wick: Chapter 4.
Additionally, Ballerina’s audience score is higher than that of Alita: Battle Angel (91 percent, 2019) and Furiosa (88 percent, 2024), two earlier solo femme action films.
With a 79 percent positive recommendation, Thursday night’s PostTrak exits were outstanding. As we’ve previously stated, the Comscore/Screen Engine polling service gives “definite recommend” more weight than the positivity score, which is 87 percent and still very good. That’s the fans again, but it speaks volumes. Ballerina prancing past $30M should benefit from this. 61 percent of men attended Thursday night’s groundbreaking ballet. Women over 25 who appeared at 29 percent gave it the highest positive scores (90 percent) and the best definite recommend.
The events of John Wick: Chapter 3-Parabellum are the setting for Ballerina, which centers on Eve Macarro (Ana de Armas), an orphan who is starting to train in the Ruska Roma assassin traditions. Gabriel Bryne’s The Chancellor caused her father’s death. She is extremely angry and will not tolerate it any longer.

Convo on Ballerina is going well for action fans who are thrilled to see one of their favorite franchises grow in a spectacular way, according to social media organization RelishMix. Many of the film’s positive feelings stem from the cast, which includes Ana de Armas, who has earned a lot of respect in other roles, and the prospect of Keanu Reeves reprising his role as John Wick. Some remarks read, “I adore Ana de Armas, and I can’t wait to see her in this kind of movie following No Time to Die.”. She was the greatest Bond Girl!’ and “I’m glad Keanu will be in the film, even though I didn’t really expect him to!” in addition to “Did I spy Norman Reedus? Between Ian McShane, Keanu, and the legendary Mr. Lance Reddick.”. Several people express their satisfaction with the film’s direction and the action featured in the trailer, saying things like, “I was wondering if they were going to do a spinoff with the dancers! This looks EPIC!!!” and, “I really hope that this is the start of a trilogy.”. “”.
Additionally, RelishMix points out that of the Ballerina cast, Reedus has the most social media followers (19.2M), followed by de Armas (15M), while Reeves remains off the grid for his films.
And as we informed you on Thursday night, Disney’s Lilo & Stitch was on the verge of becoming the second film to reach $300 million at the domestic box office so far this year, with 4,410 showings. Oh. following A Minecraft Movie, a Warner Bros./Legendary film. The 2002 Disney toon hybrid/live-action feature made $5 million Thursday, down 7% from Wednesday, for a second week of $86 million and a total of $303 million. With a third weekend of $35 million, Lilo & Stitch is predicted to rule once more.
The remaining five of the week’s top five are listed below.
2. Mission: Impossible: The Final Reckoning (Par) 3,861 theaters, Thursday $2.3M (down -10 percent from Wednesday), Week $38.9M (down -59 percent), and Week 2 total of $134.2M.
3. . 3,809 theaters, Thursday $1.2M (-10 percent), Week $26.7M, Week 1 Karate Kid: Legends (Sony).
4. . Bloodlines (NL), Final Destination, 3,134 theaters, Thursday, $1. M (-11 percent), Wk 1M (-48 percent), Wk 3 Total: $117M.
5. . Come Back (A24) 2,449 theaters, Thursday $675K (-12 percent), Week $10.4M, Week 1.
EXCLUSIVE: According to sources tonight, Ballerina, the John Wick spinoff, is hoping to gross between $3 and $5 million to $4 million in previews. That includes the Wednesday fan screenings, which began at 7:00 p.m. M. in addition to Thursday showtimes, which started at 6 p.m. M.
The $80 million to $90 million Lionsgate production is expected to gross more than $30 million, which is roughly where recent female solo action films have done well at the box office. For example, Furiosa ($26.3 million over three days last year) and Alita: Battle Angel ($28.5 million over three days in 2019).
The Thunder Road spinoff, directed by Len Wiseman, is predicted to come in second to Disney’s Lilo & Stitch, which had a third weekend gross of about $35 million and crossed the $300 million mark today.
Ballerina’s further photography was postponed for a year.
The positive aspect of Ballerina is that Thursday night viewers are enjoying the Ana de Armas film, which features a cameo from Keanu Reeves. As of right now, its audience score on Rotten Tomatoes is 94 percent, which is higher than any John Wick RT popcorn score; in 2023, John Wick: Chapter 4 scored 93 percent. In terms of reviews, Ballerina’s 72 percent certified fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes isn’t as high as that of the John Wick films, which had ratings between 86 and 94 percent certified fresh.
The total preview revenue for Ballerina is higher than the $2.4M preview revenue for Alita: Battle Angel on Tuesday night and comparable to the $3.5M preview box office for Furiosa on Thursday. The basic idea is to compare Ballerina to female solo action films rather than John Wick films. The full-on male audience that usually attends an action film with a male leading star is not always drawn to female solo action films, which are a totally different subgenre.
Ballerina’s total preview money is still more than the Thursday night of John Wick 2 in 2017 ($2.2M), but it is still far less than 2018’s John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum ($5.9M) and 2023’s John Wick: Chapter 4 ($8.9M, best preview cash in franchise).
More information will be available as it becomes available on Friday morning. We asked Lionsgate for comment, but they didn’t respond.
